The Process of a Basement Conversion

Back To Basement Ltd has a proven process for basement conversions that ensures the best possible outcome for every project. The process starts with a consultation, where one of our experienced team members will visit your property to assess the potential of your basement. They will take into consideration factors such as the height of the ceiling, the location of any structural beams, and the availability of natural light.

Based on this initial assessment, Back To Basement Ltd will create a rough design plan for your basement conversion that will be used to transform your basement into a functional and attractive living space.

Once discussed and approved by the client, the next step is to prepare the basement for the conversion. This may involve the installation of new windows, the removal of any existing fixtures, and the creation of new access points.

With the basement prepared, the conversion itself can begin. Back To Basement Ltd will work with you to ensure that every aspect of the project is carried out to the highest standards, from the installation of electrical and plumbing systems to the application of finishes and fixtures.

Finally, once the conversion is complete, Back To Basement Ltd will conduct a final inspection to ensure that everything has been completed to the highest standards. Our team will also provide you with a comprehensive maintenance guide to help you keep your basement in top condition for years to come.

We will be contacting building control to arrange a pre-work visit,

We start the project by stripping out any fixed items, such as stone shelving, ceiling surfaces, wall covering ie boards,

Any plumbing or electrical items are made safe and disconnected,

We break any existing floor surfacing such as concrete or stone, we then begin to excavate the subfloor to the desired levels,

We carry out any structural work if necessary, such as removing walls, creating new opening etc

if necessary, at this stage we would also carry out any underpinning work and foundation reinfocement work,

All our structural work is designed and calculated by a structural engineer

The walls are been prepared with moisture management system, (cavity drain membrane)

together with parameter drainage system which will carry away any water gatherring in the channels,

Also at this point, we will arrange for a visit from building regulation inspector for an aproval go ahead with next step, Concrete,

A new concrete floor is now been poured, and will dry withing 48hr ready for us to walk on and move on to next stage.

Insulation is applied on top of the new floor cavity drain membrane,

A new 18mm chipboard flooring is laid on top of the insulation creating a warm floor system,

This floor finish is a great base for your finished flooring, ie, carpet, LVT (luxury vinyl tile) laminate flooring, and engineered hardwood, just to note: for tiling over, you will need to apply a cement-based board or element board under the tiles, to give a waterproofed factor.

First, fix joinery to create suspended walls or secondary walls,

At this stage, we discuss with our clients the options to customize and configure the internal layout of their basement, such as dividing walls, storage space ideas, etc,

this stage is also an opportunity to discuss with our client the locations of any light fittings and sockets,

making it bespoke around their lifestyle,

1st fix plumbing is also carried out at this stage, preparing for the installation of new radiators

and any utility requirements,

This is an exiting stage, the drylinning or plasterboarding as we call it :)

At the end of this stage the client will get to see finally the vision becomes reality, as the basement gets it shape and size definitions,

The next stage is the finish plaster and probably the most important stage, as we only have on chance

to get the right finish on the walls and ceilings, ( We trust our plasterers greatly)

At this stage, a number of tasks are completed,

  • 2nd fix joinery is carried out, to include any bespoke storage solutions, new doors, skirting boards, architrave, and finished flooring covering, we cover all aspects of finished flooring installations apart from carpets.
  • Kitchen fitting,

  • 2nd fix electrics are installed, sockets, switches, and light fittings,
  • 2nd fix plumbing to include new radiators, bathroom installation, utility room items,

This is the final part, decorating, we do not employ a decorator, however, we can recommend one for you,

It is time to collect the last payment and hand over the keys,

An electrical certificate will be emailed to you to submit to building control,

ones the inspector has visited and gave a thumb's up, they always do :)

he will then provide you a completion certificate for your safe keep, you will need this certificate if your'e planing to sell your house at any point in the future,
